Modern Foreign Languages
Bonjour tout le monde!
Pupils at Macaulay learn French in Key Stage 2.
Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. It promotes children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. It encourages pupils to appreciate and celebrate difference and provides the foundation for learning further languages.
Our aim is to ensure that children develop a good basic understanding and a love of French. We hope to give them the foundations for further foreign language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond. We want them to feel successful in their learning and clear about how to make progress.
We enable our children to progress by focusing on the three pillars of phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Pupils learn how to sound out words in French and understand how this links to spelling. They focus on key vocabulary and express their ideas through their speaking, listening, reading and writing abilities, which progress throughout Key Stage 2. We use songs, videos, games, books, stories and interactive activities to support and engage them. Language Angels is used to support our curriculum.
Every year we celebrate with a French day. This involves the whole school learning about different aspects of French culture, such as music, art, food and fashion. This begins to build our EYFS and Key Stage 1 children’s understanding of French culture as we all celebrate together.
Children have access to French books and resources in our Supermarché book nook in the Key Stage 2 corridor.
