Personal Development at Macaulay
Personal Development at Macaulay Primary Academy
We want to improve:
Pupils’ knowledge of (and their ability to articulate) British Values, other faiths and cultures, equality and diversity, what makes us unique (including protected characteristics at an age- appropriate level), and healthy lifestyles.
The opportunities and experiences pupils have for personal development.
Our aims:
At Macaulay, we want all our pupils to become the very best people they can be. We want them to:
- become well-rounded, knowledgeable citizens who are as well prepared as possible for life in modern day Britain.
- recognise and celebrate their own uniqueness and that of others
- be proud of who they are
- confidently communicate their knowledge, views and dreams effectively.
Our personal development offer and personal, social and health education curriculum provide opportunities and learning to help our pupils achieve these ambitions. Our offer opens a wide range of opportunities, experiences and activities that pupils can take part and achieve in, that will help them to gather opinions about, and make informed choices about, the world around them.
Our PD curriculum consists of:
PSHE curriculum.
Jigsaw is our preferred PSHE programme. The content is well sequenced and progressive from EY to Year 6. It is updated regularly to align with legislation and has numerous related resources. We have set out the expected knowledge in the same way as our Reading Enhanced Curriculum so that it is well understood and accessible. We will use knowledge organisers to help pupils connect to and remember what they have learned. For example:

Delta Stars
Delta Stars in our new Personal Development offer. Our aim is to provide children with a wide range of opportunities, activities and experiences during their time with us at primary school that go above and beyond the academic curriculum. The opportunities are set out across 16 strands and build on content from Early Years to Year 6/ Completing one of the activities sich as attending an afterschool club each half term, being a house captain or even helping out in the community will earn children a ‘star card’.
For each task a child completes, children will receive a star card to place in their folder. If a child earns 6 cards, they will earn a Bronze Star Card. If they earn 9 cards, they will achieve a silver Star Card and if they earn 12, they will achieve a Gold Star Card. Each time a child earns a card they will write/draw a personalised comment onto the back of the card as a memoir. At the end of their time at Macaulay, children will leave us with a record of all their achievements!

Pupil Leadership
At Macaulay, we understand that in an ever-changing world we need to prepare our children to be successful by developing attributes and abilities that co-exist with their academic progress.
We established our Pupil Leadership Team to build and develop these critical skills for working with others, providing opportunities to take responsibility for making changes they want to see, empowering our pupils to feel part of their community and also developing their understanding of how they can meaningfully engage and have their views represented in wider society as responsible citizens in their community.
House Captains
Upon joining the academy, each pupil is assigned to one of our four houses that have been assigned an inspirational person. Despite all our inspirational people demonstrating these values, they showcase one in particular and we hope that their story inspires the children of Macaulay of what they can do by showing these 4Rs.
Kate Middleton – Responsibility
Hamza Yassin – Respect
Ed Sheeran – Resilience
Sarah Storey – Reflect
Our house captains are supported by deputies to model and encourage the children in their house to demonstrate the 4Rs of Macaulay’s values. When pupils are seen to be showing one or more of these characteristics, they are recognised through our house point reward system. Pupils collect house points which can be saved up to spend at our reward shop and at the end of each week, the House Cup is awarded to the house with most points. The cup is then adorned with the house colours and displayed outside the head teacher’s office for the pupils to see.
Children interested in becoming house captain, nominate themselves and fill in an application form. Once through to the next stage, children will give a speech to their peers about why they should be elected. Their peers then vote, the winners are then announced in assembly.
This year’s House Captains and their deputies are:
Kate Middleton Hamza Yassin Ed Sheeran Sarah Storey
Arjun Leo Josie Rosie
Paige Freddie Ryan Janice
SMSC
The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of our students has always been at the heart of the education offered in Delta Academies. Our Academies’ approach to SMSC is embedded in the Delta ethos of mutual respect, partnership working and collaboration; an approach that we believe is fundamental to our children’s personal development.

British Values
At Macaulay Primary Academy, we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events, assemblies and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all of this is a range of curriculum topics, which have strong links to the British Empire.

Jigsaw (RSE)
At Macaulay Primary Academy, we are proud to implement the Jigsaw Whole School Approach to PSHE, which includes the statutory RSHE curriculum. This innovative program places children at the heart of their learning experience, equipping them with vital skills for happy and healthy lives.

Jigsaw fosters a strong sense of belonging and community through engaging assemblies, collaborative projects, and inclusive lessons that address topics relevant to students’ everyday lives. Our mindful approach creates a safe and supportive environment where open discussions can flourish. By prioritizing emotional and social development alongside academic growth, we empower our students to become effective learners and compassionate individuals ready to contribute positively to society.
Below are the Jigsaw Units with an overview of their content.
R.E. and P.E.
Religious Education at Macaulay plays an important role in preparing pupils for adult life. It helps pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. It is a thought-provoking subject that encourages children to respect their faith/life and the way that others choose to live theirs so that their own personal, spiritual and moral development will be developed.
Physical Education at Macaulay is a great way to ensure children are developing a range of personal and social skills such as peer relationship skills, prosocial behaviours (e.g. respect), leadership skills, problem-solving skills, and personal and social responsibility skills
